Coastal Navigation or GPS Boating: Which First?

A fog bank can erase a familiar shoreline faster than most new boaters expect. One moment you can see the headland, the next you are following a glowing screen while a ferry route, shallow water, or a strong tidal stream lies somewhere ahead. That is why the question is not really coastal navigation or GPS boating. Safe cruising depends on knowing how to use GPS well while retaining the judgment and traditional navigation skills to confirm what the screen is telling you.

For coastal sailors in the waters around Vancouver and the BC coast, this matters every time the weather closes in, the current turns against you, or a narrow passage gives you little room to correct a poor decision. GPS is a remarkable tool. It is not a substitute for a prepared skipper.

Coastal Navigation or GPS Boating: Use Both, Know the Difference

GPS answers a powerful question: where does the system believe the boat is right now? With an electronic chart, it can also show course, speed, waypoint arrival time, depth contours, hazards, and the track behind you. For routine cruising, that information is fast, clear, and enormously useful.

Coastal navigation asks a broader set of questions. Where are we in relation to land, aids to navigation, traffic lanes, rocks, tide rips, and our intended destination? What will the current do over the next hour? Does the shoreline, depth, compass heading, and GPS position all agree? If they do not, which source deserves another look?

That distinction is the heart of good seamanship. GPS provides data. Navigation turns data into a safe plan. A skipper who can read the water, interpret a chart, and recognize a landmark has more ways to spot trouble before it becomes urgent.

There is no virtue in refusing modern electronics. Equally, there is no wisdom in treating a chartplotter as infallible. The best approach is layered: electronic navigation for speed and situational awareness, backed by paper-chart awareness, visual observations, a compass, depth soundings, and a sensible margin around hazards.

What GPS Does Exceptionally Well

A properly installed, up-to-date GPS chartplotter reduces workload. It can display your position in seconds, make a route easier to follow, and help a crew stay oriented when visibility is poor. Used with AIS, it can also improve awareness of nearby commercial traffic, particularly in busy waters.

GPS is especially useful for keeping a clean record of your track. When returning through a familiar passage after dark or retracing a route in deteriorating weather, that history can be valuable. It is also excellent for estimating arrival times, provided you account for wind, sea state, and current rather than assuming the boat will maintain a single speed.

But electronic charts are only as trustworthy as their setup and the person interpreting them. A route line may pass close to danger because a waypoint was dropped carelessly. Chart display settings can hide useful details at the wrong zoom level. A GPS position may be accurate while the chart datum, antenna location, or entered route is not being considered correctly.

The concern is rarely that GPS will fail without warning. More often, the failure is human: watching the magenta line instead of looking outside, entering a route too quickly, or assuming a plotted course accounts for a tidal set that is quietly pushing the boat sideways.

The Skills That Make Electronics Safer

Coastal navigation is not about performing complicated calculations for their own sake. It is a practical habit of cross-checking. Before departing, study the route on a chart at a useful scale. Identify shallow areas, rocks, controlled passages, ferry crossings, anchorages, escape options, and places where a change in weather could alter the plan.

Then consider the tide and current as part of the route, not a detail to check later. A boat making six knots through the water may make far less over the ground when meeting a strong current. In a narrow passage, that can change the arrival time, fuel use, comfort, and level of control. In some locations, choosing the right time is far more valuable than pushing the throttle or carrying more sail.

On the water, use visual pilotage. Compare the real shoreline with the chart. Identify buoys by their characteristics, not simply by their general location. Take note of conspicuous points, ranges, leading marks, and changes in depth. A compass bearing to a known object can confirm whether your GPS position makes sense. So can a depth reading when compared with the chart and the state of tide.

None of these checks needs to feel academic. They become a normal rhythm: look outside, look at the chart, look at the instruments, and ask whether the picture agrees. When it does, confidence grows. When it does not, slow down and find out why.

Position Fixing Is a Habit, Not an Emergency Procedure

Every skipper should be able to establish a position without relying entirely on a chartplotter. In clear conditions, two or three bearings to known objects can provide a fix. In closer quarters, a bearing and a depth contour, or a visual range between two charted marks, may narrow the answer quickly.

The value is not nostalgia. A manual fix trains your eye to recognize where you are and where you are heading. It also gives you a recovery method if the primary electronics lose power, freeze, receive poor data, or simply appear inconsistent with what you see.

Keep a basic log as you travel. Record time, position, course, speed, weather, and important observations at reasonable intervals. A log is useful when reviewing a passage, but its immediate benefit is that it keeps the skipper mentally engaged. If you have written down where you were 30 minutes ago and the current you expected, you are better prepared to judge whether the boat is where it should be now.

Build a Navigation Plan Before Leaving the Dock

A safe route begins before lines are cast off. Start with the destination, but do not stop there. Choose logical legs, identify a comfortable speed for each one, and mark areas that require heightened attention. Consider what you will do if visibility falls, the wind rises, a crew member becomes seasick, or you decide the original destination is no longer the right choice.

This is where paper charts remain useful even aboard an electronically equipped boat. They give a wider view of the surrounding coast and make it easier to discuss the whole passage with the crew. They also create a practical backup when paired with a compass, current tables, tide information, and a handheld GPS or phone kept charged and protected.

Redundancy should be sensible, not excessive. A coastal day sail may only require a chartplotter, a paper chart, a compass, and a charged backup device. A longer passage or overnight trip deserves more preparation, including spare power options and a clear understanding of how the boat’s navigation equipment is powered and operated.

Learn the Screen, Then Learn the Sea

The fastest way to become overconfident is to follow routes created by someone else without understanding them. A shared track may have been made in different weather, at a different tide, on a boat with a different draft, or by a skipper willing to take risks you would not choose. Treat any imported route as a starting point for review, never as proof that a passage is safe.

Likewise, GPS boating skills improve when you learn the specific functions of your own equipment. Know how to change chart scale, find the information page for a buoy or hazard, set alarms thoughtfully, enter and edit waypoints, check the chart datum, and return to a safe route if you become disoriented. Practice these tasks while tied up or in open water, not for the first time in a confined channel.
